Tweaking the powerful is a function of great comedy, but lecturing feels like preaching, even to the already converted who, face it, are more likely to be watching. The chemistry is still there as she wrangles Frank Fontana Joe Regalbuto and Corky Sherwood Faith Ford to be her sidekicks yet again — and most hilariously, lures sheepishly neurotic producer Miles Silverberg Grant Shaud out of his darkened Watergate lair, cowering after spending two years on The View. Some gags flop by reminding us too predictably how much time has passed: Murphy being weaned off her flip phone by the requisite tech millennial Nik Dodani , Corky experiencing on-air hot flashes, a “Silver Singles” dating app for eternal bachelor Frank. But the new Murphy does have one smart multi-generational ace up its sleeve: Bergen with Jake McDorman. Mother and son have an easy, affectionate rapport, and he softens her edges while pricking her pretensions. Wisely, the revival is limited to an initial episode run, by which time Murphy will presumably have blown off plenty of steam. Given the times we live in, she may never run out of gas.

World Series Of Dating is described as turning dating into an American-style competitive sport, “with all of the sporting conventions that go with it – overblown graphics, music and scripted comedy analysis”. An 8-part series, due to begin broadcasting next month, has been filming at Pacific Quay studios in Glasgow, and is hosted by American comedian Rob Riggle in the guise of American commentator and “legendary dater” Doyle MacManus.
The BBC describe the format, which aims to match up real life men and women as dating couples, thus: From the moment the single men walk into the zone the women can decide to buzz them out of the game for whatever reason they wish. Also appearing throughout the show are two commentators who discuss and reflect on the action as it happens with super-slow mo replays and many other sporting conventions.
The comedy of embarrassment focusses on twenty-something Pete Rafe Spall , a sports writer whose lack of tact and run of bad luck lead to failure in almost every situation. His actions are narrated by a pair of reporters Simon Greenall and Ian Kirkby as if his life were a sporting match. It’s a huge bonus to have Doyle MacManus and James Chetwynd Talbot on board to provide the kind of sensitive commentary that is a perfect companion to that tricky and unforgiving first date moment.
Using a cross-genre combination, we have been able to utilise our reality and comedy experience to create a unique entity. BBC Three is the perfect home to celebrate an awkward right of passage we all go through, with humour and fun.

Julia Davis talks new show Camping and the future of comedy On the eve of her new sitcom, Julia Davis talks anxieties, personal and professional, with Sarah Hughes Sunday 20 March Her character, Faye, has just had noisy sex with her new boyfriend in the changing rooms of a shop. The ring that she and her boyfriend were discussing, perhaps? Or the Ian Astbury of the Cult memorabilia that the shopkeeper was so strangely keen to discuss? Or could there be something unspeakable in the bag — some dark and disturbing horror that will make the audience watching at home both squirm and squeak?
Camping, another prime Davis horror show which starts on Sky Atlantic next month, follows a group of friends on a holiday from hell. I suppose I do sort of have a tendency in my brain to take things to the extreme; things other people might just ignore, I perhaps dwell on. However, in Camping, she has taken on the relatively innocuous role of party girl Faye, while leaving the most monstrous part to Vicky Pepperdine as control freak Fiona, a woman who spends her time lying to get her own way, bullying her hapless husband, and smothering her son with a terrifying motherly love.
The second series is a bit cartoonish and all over the place. I think it might be considered bad taste or too weird. Back in the terrestrial world, she is currently working on a series for Channel 4, provisionally titled Morning Has Broken, about a daytime TV show.

The rest of the UK – today more or less Ever since I began this project I’ve had people emailing me asking me to include all the other studios around the UK. Well, sorry, but I am trying to fit work, home and some sort of social life into my time. However, tucked away at the end of my ‘history of old ITV studios in London’ page was a section that began as a summary of what happened to the old ITV studios around the rest of the country.
It then expanded a bit to include a few other studios so I decided it was probably about time it was given its own page. Incidentally – I’m only including TV production studios that make a variety of programmes for network transmission on UK channels – not those built for a specific soap eg Doctors or regional news studios.
